The original post read, "How @FLOTUS shed an angry black woman caricature and evolved into a political powerhouse." That tweet was deleted after many commented on the offensive language.

The NYT Styles account noted the change later Tuesday afternoon and re-wrote the post with this verbiage instead: "The Closer: Michelle Obama." A parenthetical thought read, "deleted earlier tweets for language that some found offensive."

Soon after the post with the "angry black woman caricature" went up, responses to the Styles tweet flooded Twitter. The story itself went online on Saturday with the headline: "The Closer: Michelle Obama" and sub-headline: "Dismissed early on by critics, the first lady has evolved into a powerful presence on the campaign trail."
